With the rise of social media has come a rise in fake news and misinformation - the group met to discuss whether their libraries tried to implement services or resources to try to combat fake news and what strategies are the best for teaching digital and media literacy.
The group discussed methods of teaching patrons digital literacy and whether classes or one on one training worked better.
Fake news, scam ads and spam, security issues such as password strength and generation, and fake news were all discussed.
It was mentioned that for many users transitioning from a smartphone to a full PC, and visa versa can be difficult. Ease of accessibility was also mentioned as important.
Mr. Tosh informed the group that CDLC's recent presentation by Jessamyn West "It's Computers All The Way Down: Navigating the Digital Divide in the COVID Era" covered much of this overall topic and was well received. He also volunteered to send the link to the recording to the RIO members who were unable to attend, and several members asked for it.
