Reference, Instruction, and Outreach (RIO)

Guide to provide a forum to learn and share ideas about the various aspects of library reference, instruction, and outreach.

Meeting Overview

While books are still the most common things loaned by libraries, many are expanding into loaning nontraditional items.  We held a discussion about libraries loaning unique items, as well as things the participants wished their library loaned. The discussion of the Library of Things included what has been loaned by our libraries, and the policies/procedures for those loans. Some of these things included tech devices such as Rokus and WiFi hotspots, games (board games, etc.), telescopes, tools, medical models such as skeletons (and also the real thing), knitting and crocheting needles and equipment, and exercise equipment and bicycles. Also mentioned were the food distribution (like fresh vegetables) some of the local public libraries are doing for their area.
