Reference, Instruction, and Outreach (RIO)

Guide to provide a forum to learn and share ideas about the various aspects of library reference, instruction, and outreach.

Meeting Notes

"Fostering technological literacy is important for any type of library to provide to its users whether that be through collections, programming, or resources.  During our discussion, we’ll look at what technology trends are most impacting your patrons and how different libraries are addressing those needs."

Discussion about:

Library resources focusing on discovery systems - what platforms have they used/are using and what are their plusses and minuses?

  • Folio - which works better for larger libraries
  • Primo- the discovery interface for Alma from ExLibris.
  • Springshare - low cost.
  • WorldShare Management Services (WMS) from OCLC which is expensive.

Artificial Intelligence

  • Primo for Alma - has AI layer, not great to use.
  • Medical - many publishers are adding AI to their database products.
  • JSTOR - a beta interactive research tool.
  • Turnitin - An AI for detecting AI-created works. Results not reliable.

Online Security

  • Most require two-factor authentication.
  • Some are using a single cloud-based server for access, but there are questions if the ease of use justifies the security dangers.
  • Personal tech security.
  • Telehealth - privacy issues.
  • Financial app/banking systems.

Recordings

  • Most use Camtasia, Vox or YouTube.
  • Questions on who owns the recordings - the individual or institutions. Especially for posted class recordings.

Teaching

  • Instruction for most of what was already discussed.
