DEI is a prominent and far-reaching topic for libraries, touching upon everything from hiring and retention to collections to policies like library fines to resource allocation. Participants were asked if their library altered its policies and procedures to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion, and if they faced any challenges when trying to discuss DEI issues in their libraries or with their patrons?
Some participants were using LibGuides to present DEI topics to staff, faculty, and students. They also used DEI topics for class/lesson examples to familiarize their patrons with the subjects. Another point of focus was in adding DEI materials (books, etc.) to their libraries' collections. Some libraries have DEI working groups and are doing collection analysis, or book clubs with DEI topics.
It was noted that sensitive topics may result in slow progress. Some staff may have sensitivity to works/topics/language. Diversifing staff can help, as well as haveing a inclusive managers' toolkit.
