This guide contains current and upcoming events of interest to librarians, archivist, library staff, and others in Capital District Region.

GIS Data for Librarians

Have you ever wondered what GIS is and how librarians across the country are using it?   Interested in supporting just a few community college students in an informal setting with limited commitment? If so please consider participating in this workshop geared just for librarians.  People working in public libraries are especially encouraged to participate. This program has been running in the Rochester region for two years with success, and we are excited to bring it to the Capital Region.

The instructors for this course, Jon Little and Heather Pierce of Monroe Community College's Geography Department, are participating in a National Science Foundation Advanced Technological Education Grant: Meeting Workforce Needs for Skilled Geospatial Technicians through Virtual Geospatial Information Science Technology Education. The grant includes training library staff in basic geospatial programs so they can assist in reducing the digital divide, increase geospatial awareness, and increase student success in geospatial programs.  A tentative agenda for the day is below.

This is an in-person, hands-on program. It will be held in room B48 (Basement) of University at Albany's University Library, Uptown Campus, 1400 Washington Ave, Albany, NY. Space is limited to 10 participants. No prior knowledge or experience of geospatial technology is needed.
