We now use the web for almost everything, and many of the materials that libraries and archives collect are now online. How do we preserve websites? Even if we have web collections, how do we make them available and discoverable? What does it take to start collecting? This program will discuss reasons to preserve the web, assess the long-term research potential of web archives and showcase a range of web archiving tools – from fully-featured subscription services to open source tools. Participants will see a bit of the real-world work experience of collecting the web and learn how to scope a sustainable collecting program. The program will be followed by some structured Q&A.
About the Presenter: Greg Wiedeman is the University Archivist, M.E. Grenander Department of Special Collections & Archives, University at Albany.
