Continuing Education and Events: 09/13 - Introduction to OpenRefine

This guide contains current and upcoming events of interest to librarians, archivist, library staff, and others in Capital District Region.

Introduction to OpenRefine

This event will be held via Zoom webinar.

Do you deal with library data or metadata? Perhaps in your library catalog records, digital repository metadata, or even spreadsheets? As the amount of data we deal with grows, so do the errors and inconsistencies in that data, and the manual correction of these issues becomes even more time-consuming. To help you with your data clean-up needs, this course will review OpenRefine, the software which allows users to quickly view, identify inconsistencies in, and enhance a variety of data.

Learning objectives for this session include:

  • Learn how to download and install the OpenRefine software
  • Understand OpenRefine's data-editing capabilities
  • Determine ways OpenRefine can be useful in your daily library work

CDLC is offering this workshop in cooperation with Amigos Library Services. Emily Nimsakont is the presenter. She is the Digital Librarian at RStudio, a data science software company. She holds a master's degree in library science from the University of Missouri-Columbia. She is the current president of the Nebraska Library Association.

This workshop is sponsored by CDLC's Regional Automation Advisory Committee (RAAC).
