Geospatial Technology for Librarians: Hands-on GIS Exercises and Monroe Community College's GIST Program

NOTE: THIS IS AN IN-PERSON PROGRAM. It will be held in our NEW location in the New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) building, 800 Troy Schenectady Rd, Latham, NY 12110. At this time, masking is required in our building. Our auditorium allows for distancing, and we have an upgraded ventilation system. 

This hands-on workshop will provide an overview of the field of Geospatial Information Science and Technology (GIST). It will also provide information on Monroe Community College’s geospatial training program. The college received a National Science Foundation Advanced Technological Education Grant to increase geospatial awareness. The College offers a  new A.A.S. in GIST, a 24 credit GIST certificate, and a 9 credit micro-credential program, all of which can be completed online.

Geospatial Information Science and Technology (G.I.S.T.) is used virtually everywhere. It converts remote sensing information provided by satellites and imagery into digital data. Data that helps drivers find their destinations, warns us of approaching storms, locates energy resources, tracks global warming, provides intelligence for national security, business, the environment, and more!

This program will define and provide some examples of geospatial technology, introduce participants to Monroe Community College’s GIST program and how it is working to reduce the digital divide, and allow ample time for a hands-on web mapping exercise. 

This workshop will be presented by Jon Little, Geography and GIST Professor at Monroe Community College and Principal Investigator on the NSF grant.  

Because of the interactive, hands-on nature of this program, attendance is limited to 18 people.

Each attendee must have a laptop. CDLC has a few available to borrow on a first-come, first-served basis.
