Health Librarians' Interest Group

Meeting Notes

First meeting of the group - March 24th, 2022.

The group discussed online tools that they thought needed updating/fixing including:

  • PubMed (alternatives suggested were Web of Science, EBSCO or Ovid Medline)
  • MyNCBI
  • Docline (questions as to updating with linking to OCLC)
  • EMR's (in general - library access and information linking issues)

The group discussed point-of-care online resources including Up To Date and Dynamed, and many were concerned with the popularity of Up to Date and its price. Some were concerned with new clinicians and medical students getting addicted to only one tool, and not looking for (or know how to look for) all available medical/health information on a topic.

Nursing resources such as CINAHL, and hospital Magnet status for their nursing departments were also discussed.

Mr. Tosh volunteered to create a new mailing list for this group, all the participants asked to be included.

The topic of hard copy collection development was considered, especially as a response to the threat of total medical/health overreliance on online resources. In the event of server/network loss (such as a result of 9/11), then area libraries having specialized hard copy reserves can meet the need for basic medical information. It was decided that CDLC should explore the development of a medical/health hard copy reserve in conjunction with the coordinated collection development committee to try to meet that need if it should arise again.

It was decided that the group will meet again sometime in the fall.
