High School to College Transition Interest Group

Meeting Notes

The meeting began with a presentation by MaryKate Kraus, Director, School Programs and Educational Outreach, Hudson Valley Community College. The presentation was recorded, and a link is in the Resources box below. Note that this is an unlisted YouTube video, so people need the link to view it.

The presentation was followed by a Question and Answer period. Some things to note:

  • HVCC classes that accept high school students (vs University in the High School classes that take place in the high school and are taught by high school students) follow the college's calendar, so students need to be aware of that.
  • If students drop a class, including University in the High School classes, they MUST withdraw with HVCC. Every year there are issues with students not withdrawing and having it show up on their transcript when they enroll in HVCC.
  • Counselors should only approve students who they think are capable of doing the work. If students fail a class, it can affect financial aid if they later enroll in college.
  • High school students who go to schools with 100% free lunch will need to submit verification that their family meets the guidelines for receiving free lunch to get tuition waived.

We briefly discussed the Clearinghouse. The original surveys were created before COVID and many things have changed. The survey is also long, so we would like to revise before sending out to the wider CDLC community. Please review the surveys and provide feedback by Friday, February 25, 2022.
