Autism Awareness for Library Staff, Fall 2019

Date: November 5, 2019 from 12:00pm - 2:00pm

Place: Capital District Library Council

Presenter: Janine Kruiswijk, Executive Director, Autism Society of the Greater Capital Region

Description:

In libraries, we place a great deal of importance on providing equal access to information and on quality customer service. But are we sure we’re targeting all members of our community? How can we foster trust and create welcoming spaces? What steps can we take in order to become better ambassadors for our libraries? What are the limits of providing inclusive library service?

As of 2009, approximately 1 in 110 people in the US were diagnosed with autism. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability that can cause significant social, communication, and behavioral challenges. Sometimes referred to as a hidden disability, there are often no outward physical characteristics that would signal a person as having autism. Lack of knowledge about ASD can often lead to misperceptions about people with ASD.

In this workshop, we will:

  • learn how to identify behaviors exhibited by people with ASD
  • challenge attitudes and perceptions we may have about people with autism
  • learn how to provide more effective customer service to those on the spectrum and their families, as well as to the general public

Cost: $10 covers the cost of the workshop and lunch! Please bring cash or checks payable to CDLC to the event as online payments are not accepted.
